Living with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) poses its unique set of challenges, and for me, PCOS acne has been a constant battle.

In my pursuit of clearer skin, I have explored various skincare solutions, but none seemed to provide lasting relief.

Then, I discovered Tretinoin, or Tretin Cream 0.025%, a promising remedy for acne and skin texture issues.

As someone intimately familiar with the frustrations of PCOS acne, my journey with Tretinoin has been deeply personal and transformative.

So, read on to know more about my PCOS acne and Tretinoin journey and how it’s transformed my approach to skincare.

My journey

My journey with Tretinoin began like many others – with a mix of skepticism and desperation.

I had tried countless over-the-counter products, and prescription antibiotics and even experimented with dietary changes, but nothing seemed to tame the relentless breakouts that plagued my skin.

It was not just about vanity; it was about reclaiming confidence and control over my body.

What is Tretinoin?
Tretinoin belongs to the retinoids class of medications and is derived from vitamin A. It is a prescription-strength topical treatment used for acne, sun-damaged skin, and fine wrinkles. It accelerates skin cell turnover, prompting faster division and shedding of cells to facilitate the emergence of healthier, newer skin cells.

When my dermatologist suggested Tretinoin, specifically Tretin Cream 0.025%, I was hesitant.

I had heard horror stories of flaky, irritated skin and dreaded the infamous “purge” phase where acne seems to worsen before it gets better.

But with nothing left to lose, I decided to give it a shot.

Weeks 1-4

The first few weeks with Tretinoin were rough.

As expected, my skin rebelled against the introduction of this potent treatment, turning red, dry, and incredibly sensitive.

Despite the discomfort, I persisted, inspired by the success stories I had read online.

Every night, I made sure to gently cleanse and thoroughly dry my face, ensuring it was prepped for treatment.

Starting with the lowest dosage and using it just once a week, I took extra care around sensitive areas, like my eyes and mouth corners.

Before applying Tretin Cream, I would layer on a thin coat of Vaseline or another protective barrier to shield these delicate spots from potential irritation.

Sun protection became a top priority, with SPF 50 applied every morning to counteract the heightened risk of sunburn caused by Tretinoin.

Despite dealing with initial dryness, peeling, and flaking, I kept at it.

The introduction of the sandwich method, involving moisturizing before and after applying Tretinoin, proved to be a game-changer in alleviating discomfort during this transformative phase.

The sandwich method for using Tretinoin includes applying a moisturizer first, followed by Tretinoin, and then another layer of moisturizer. This approach is beneficial for reducing irritation and enhancing tolerance, particularly for individuals beginning Tretinoin treatment, especially if they have sensitive skin. It’s important to note that the sandwich method doesn’t weaken or diminish the effectiveness of Tretinoin; instead, it makes it more tolerable.

Weeks 5-10

As I progressed into weeks five through ten, I noticed a positive change in my skin’s tolerance to Tretinoin.

With my dermatologist’s consultation, I increased my usage to twice a week.

Acne occurrences decreased, and existing marks gradually faded away.

Consistently applying Tretinoin at night, followed by moisturization, became a ritual I religiously followed.

Although there were occasional setbacks, they served as reminders of the importance of patience and perseverance.

Weeks 10-24

As my journey progressed beyond the tenth week, I was pleasantly surprised by the noticeable results that went beyond what I had expected.

Acne occurrences diminished significantly, and my skin exhibited a newfound clarity and radiance.

The long-term benefits of Tretinoin became increasingly apparent, emphasizing the significance of consistency and adherence to the prescribed regimen.

Warning:
While there is limited evidence linking topical Tretinoin to fetal risks, its safety during pregnancy is inconclusive. Avoid use if pregnant or planning pregnancy, as uncertainties persist regarding potential associations with miscarriage, low birth weight, preterm delivery, or intrauterine death. Consult your healthcare provider for guidance.

Present

Today, several months into my Tretinoin journey, I can confidently say that it has transformed my skin – and, by extension, my confidence and self-esteem.

While I still deal with occasional breakouts, they no longer control my life as they once did.

Tretinoin has become an essential part of my skincare routine, a reliable ally in the ongoing battle against PCOS acne.

Looking ahead to the long term, I anticipate even greater improvements as Tretinoin’s benefits accumulate with time.

It’s a reminder that patience and persistence truly pay off in achieving healthier, clearer skin.

Key Points to Consider:
  • Consult your dermatologist: Seek guidance from a healthcare professional to tailor your Tretinoin regimen to your specific needs and address any concerns or side effects
  • Start slow: Begin with the lowest prescribed dose to minimize potential side effects such as dryness and flakiness
  • Adjustment phase: Understand that the initial weeks may involve skin irritation, purging, and increased sensitivity as your skin adapts to Tretinoin
  • The sandwich method: Incorporate moisturizer as a buffer before and after applying Tretinoin to mitigate dryness and peeling
  • Patience is key: Results may take time to manifest, with noticeable improvements typically seen after 6-12 weeks of consistent use
  • Consistency is crucial: Maintain a regular skincare routine and adhere to your prescribed Tretinoin schedule to maximize effectiveness
  • Sun protection: Always wear SPF 30+ during the day to protect your skin from potential sun damage and increase the effectiveness of Tretinoin
  • Listen to your skin: Pay attention to how your skin responds to Tretinoin and adjust your routine to ensure optimal results with minimal irritation
  • Embrace the journey: View your Tretinoin journey as an opportunity for personal growth and self-care, celebrating each milestone
