Their average age was 70.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wowrxpharmacy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Cancer-1024x536.webp\" alt=\"Cancer\" class=\"wp-image-19301\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Cancer Cell<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The ATOMIC-meso trial was carried out at 43 centres across five countries from 2017 to 2021.<br><br>Patients who received pegargiminase and chemotherapy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2024\/feb\/15\/drug-offers-wonderful-breakthrough-in-treatment-of-asbestos-linked-cancer#:~:text=Those%20who%20received%20pegargiminase%20and%20chemotherapy%20survived%20for%20an%20average%20of%209.3%20months%2C%20compared%20with%207.7%20months%20for%20those%20who%20had%20the%20placebo%20and%20chemotherapy%2C%20according%20to%20the%20results%20published%20in%20JAMA%20Oncology.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">survived<\/a> for an average of 9.3 months, while those who had the placebo and chemotherapy survived for 7.7 months on average, as reported in JAMA Oncology.<br><br>The average duration of progression-free survival was 6.2 months for patients who received pegargiminase chemotherapy, compared to 5.6 months for those who received the placebo and chemotherapy.<br><br>Importantly, the treatment was well tolerated, with no new safety concerns for patients with asbestos-linked cancer.<br><br>This marks the first successful combination of chemotherapy with a drug targeting cancer metabolism developed for this disease in 20 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e3f4df\">It follows Professor Szlosarek&#8217;s two-decade-long work, <a href=\"https:\/\/mesothelioma.net\/mesothelioma-news\/combining-chemotherapy-with-treatment-that-starves-mesothelioma-cells-extends-survival\/#:~:text=The%20study%20follows,form%20of%20cancer.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">starting<\/a> from his discovery that Mesothelioma cells lack a protein called ASS1, necessary for producing the amino acid arginine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Utilizing this understanding, researchers developed the new drug, ADI-PEG20.
