Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia Treatment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia (FFA) progresses slowly, which makes early diagnosis of the disease challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A standardized guideline for Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia treatment has yet to be established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The treatment aims to inhibit the disease&#8217;s progression and limit the related side effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a study published in The Journal of American Academy of Dermatology, 33.3% of women between the ages 61 and 70 suffer from <a href=\"https:\/\/WowRxPharmacy.com\/blog\/hair-loss\/frontal-fibrosing-alopecia-understanding-the-causes-and-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia<\/a> (FFA) with an odds ratio of 3.38.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most patients in these studies and reports were treated with a combination of therapies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A treatment plan for FFA patients may include one or more of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"topical-treatments\">Tratamientos t\u00f3picos<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Topical treatments involve medications that are supposed to be use<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Relatively low risk of systemic side effects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Application geared toward the patient<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"topical-corticosteroids\">Topical Corticosteroids<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Topical Corticosteroids often form a part of the first-line therapy for Frontal Fibrosing <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/WowRxPharmacy.com\/blog\/hair-loss\/alopecia-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Alopecia treatment\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">Alopecia treatment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early stages of FFA, when there is itchiness, topical application of Corticosteroids is often considered a <a href=\"https:\/\/reader.elsevier.com\/reader\/sd\/pii\/S1578219007705243?token=0ACD30EB61B420B0FF6E960251ABD0620241836DB518993ABB26E5ADF80DEBF00C833FFCE6BA0504207FF995D495EC5C&amp;originRegion=eu-west-1&amp;originCreation=20230120132346\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">rational<\/a> approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Long-term usage of Corticosteroids may cause adverse side effects, such as skin atrophy and spider veins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To decrease the risk of these side effects, topical Calcineurin Inhibitors (tCI) have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6500869\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">suggested<\/a> to be alternated with topical Corticosteroids.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"topical-calcineurin-inhibitors\">Topical Calcineurin Inhibitors<\/h3>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/WowRxPharmacy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Topical-Calcineurin-Inhibitors-for-FFA-treatment-1024x536.webp\" alt=\"Topical Calcineurin Inhibitor ointment for frontal fibrosing by<\/a> Fertig and Tosti stated topical Calcineurin Inhibitors as their favored combination treatment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They have experienced the best outcomes when receiving medical treatment in combination with the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Topical Calcineurin Inhibitors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oral Finasteride<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hydroxychloroquine<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Excimer laser<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"minoxidil\">Minoxidil<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Minoxidil has been used to treat pattern baldness for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6691938\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">long time<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is known to reduce the rate of follicle miniaturization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Topical Minoxidil as a standalone treatment might not be effective in Frontal Fibrosing Alopecia treatment.\u00c2&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it helps increase the hair volume when prescribed as a part of a combination treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"intralesional-corticosteroids\">Intralesional Corticosteroids<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Intralesional Corticosteroids appear as one of the most promising therapies in treating FFA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The treatment involves injecting the affected area with intralesional Triamcinolone Acetonide (TAC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/ijd.12479\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">review<\/a> observed a response rate on both scalp and eyebrows. It included 89% of patients treated with 4-5 injections each month at a concentration of 2.5 mg\/mL.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Para <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/bjd\/article\/163\/5\/1142\/6644254\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">eyebrows<\/a>, intralesional TAC 10 mg\/mL with 0.125mL per eyebrow has shown to be beneficial with a low risk of atrophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Products containing Minoxidil<\/strong><\/td><td><strong>Approx. Cost<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/wowrxpharmacy.com\/es_co\/producto\/hair-4u-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hair 4u 2%<\/a><\/td><td>$6.60<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><a href=\"https:\/\/wowrxpharmacy.com\/es_co\/producto\/tugain-5-60ml\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tugain 5%<\/a><\/td><td>$20.54<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"oral-antiinflammatory-agents\">Oral Anti-Inflammatory Agents<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (<a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/drugs\/11086-non-steroidal-anti-inflammatory-medicines-nsaids\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NSAIDs<\/a>) work like corticosteroids.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They block the production of chemicals in the body that causes inflammation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some such anti-inflammatory medications are:<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hydroxychloroquine\">Hydroxychloroquine<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>It is an antimalarial drug with anti-inflammatory properties.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0190962219305249\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">estudiar<\/a> by Ho A and Shapiro demonstrated that individuals with FFA who received Hydroxychloroquine in combination therapy had favorable results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the rare side effects of prolonged use of Hydroxychloroquine includes retinopathy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The American Academy of Ophthalmology recommends these patients receive baseline eye examination and annual screening after using the medication for five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also recommend quitting the medication when experiencing vision loss.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"oral-tetracyclines\">Oral Tetracyclines<\/h3>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/WowRxPharmacy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Oral-tetracyclines-for-FFA-1024x536.webp\" alt=\"Oral tetracyclines to treat FFA\" class=\"wp-image-2546\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Oral Tetracyclines can help in FFA treatment<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to their anti-inflammatory properties, Tetracycline antibiotics have been used in treating FFA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These include Doxycycline and Minocycline.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A retrospective review by Mayo Clinic and another report by <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/24738979\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Banka et al.<\/a> stated the efficacy of oral tetracyclines in disease stabilization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Its side effects might include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>N\u00e1useas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lightheadedness<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Esophagitis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Photosensitivity<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Skin eruption, and<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Infection<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These adverse side effects might limit their use.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"5reductase-inhibitors\">5?-Reductase Inhibitors<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>The same research by Ho A and Shapiro found 5?-RIs as the most beneficial for Frontal Fibrosing <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/WowRxPharmacy.com\/blog\/hair-loss\/understanding-alopecia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Alopecia\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">Alopecia<\/a> treatment.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Salts such as Finasteride and Dutasteride are the 5?-RIs studied in this research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They inhibit the conversion of Testosterone into <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/WowRxPharmacy.com\/blog\/hair-loss\/dht\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"DHT\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">DHT<\/a>, thereby reducing hair loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A trial of 5?-RIs could be considered for patients with early signs of FFA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is, however, to note that 5?-RIs are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK507858\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">category X<\/a> drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It means that it can not be prescribed for those pregnant or planning pregnancy.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"peroxisome-proliferatoractivated-receptor-ppar-agonists\">Peroxisome Proliferator-Activated Receptor ? (PPAR-?) Agonists<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>PPAR-?, such as Pioglitazone, is conventionally used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is also a proposed Lichen Planopilaris (LPP) and Frontal Fibrosing <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/WowRxPharmacy.com\/blog\/hair-loss\/alopecia-treatment\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"Alopecia treatment\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">Alopecia treatment<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, some studies show positive responses of LPP patients towards Pioglitazone; its efficacy for treating FFA still needs to be established.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"systemic-immunosuppressant-agents\">Systemic Immunosuppressant Agents<\/h2>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/WowRxPharmacy.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Systemic-Immunosuppressant-Agents-for-FFA-treatment-1024x536.webp\" alt=\"Systemic Immunosuppressant Agents to treat FFA\" class=\"wp-image-2549\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Systemic Immunosuppressant Agents<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Immunosuppressants such as Methotrexate and Mycophenolate Mofetil have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S002561961830524X\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">tested<\/a> in FFA patients to show positive results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, more studies with a larger sample are needed before establishing any conclusions about the efficacy of the two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are some studies evaluating oral Prednisone for treating FFA. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0190962297703268\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Kossard et al.<\/a> reported slowed hair loss in half the participants with rapidly progressive hair loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ho and Shapiro suggested treating FFA patients with an oral Prednisone dose of 40 mg daily.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They tapered it down by 5 mg per week for eight weeks. It was also suggested to follow it up with maintenance therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All this was meant for patients with rapid progression of the disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"other-systemic-therapies\">Other Systemic Therapies<\/h2>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/publications\/dictionaries\/cancer-terms\/def\/systemic-therapy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Systemic therapies<\/a> include treatment using substances that reach and affect the cells in the body by traveling along the bloodstream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some such examples that have been studied to treat FFA include the following:<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"oral-retinoids\">Oral Retinoids<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Retinoids like oral Isotretinoin have <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/6172678\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">traditionally<\/a> been used to treat acne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But oral retinoids have also been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC7200469\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">used<\/a> to treat LPP.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on this, systemic retinoids have been proposed to treat FFA patients since FFA is a variant of LPP.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a study by <a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/article\/med\/29036252\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Rakowska et al.<\/a>, 76% of the patients treated with Isotretinoin achieved disease stabilization.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, 72% did not experience any disease progression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In another study by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/09546634.2018.1542480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Babahosseini<\/a> and others, systemic retinoids, when given in combination with&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>5?-RIs were the most effective treatment option for that study.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"plateletrich-plasma-prp\">Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)<\/h3>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1111\/dth.13072\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Ozcan<\/a> et al. have reported on using PRP to treat resistant FFA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But there need to be more well-designed studies to prove the efficacy of PRP for FFA.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"lowlevel-lasers\">Low-level lasers<\/h2>\n\n\n<p>Light treatments are another option to treat FFA. It could be used alone or as an adjunct therapy.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"su-box su-box-style-soft\" id=\"\" style=\"border-color:#073d11;border-radius:10px;\"><div class=\"su-box-title\" style=\"background-color:#3A7044;color:#FFFFFF;border-top-left-radius:8px;border-top-right-radius:8px\">Nota:<\/div><div class=\"su-box-content su-u-clearfix su-u-trim\" style=\"border-bottom-left-radius:8px;border-bottom-right-radius:8px\">\nAs a general suggestion, hair restoration surgery should be attempted after at least 1-2 years of disease stabilization.<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the low-level laser treatment options are:<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"excimer-laser\">Excimer laser<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>Excimer laser (UVB 308 nm) has been used to suppress inflammation visible in patients with FFA and\/or LPP as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pruritus<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Erythema<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pain<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hyperkeratosis&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>En un <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30893399\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">survey<\/a>, patients received an average of three different treatments for hair loss.
