href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2024\/03\/01\/health\/cdc-covid-isolation-recommendations\/index.html#:~:text=In%202021%2C%20at%20their%20peak%2C%20there%20were%202.5%20million%20hospitalizations%20for%20Covid%2D19%2C%20and%20in%202023%2C%20that%20number%20dropped%2060%25%20to%20900%2C000%20hospitalizations.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">there were<\/a> 2.5 million hospitalizations for COVID-19 at their peak, but in 2023, that number dropped by 60% to 900,000 hospitalizations.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decrease in deaths has been even more significant, with 450,000 deaths from COVID-19 in 2021, declining by 83% to about 75,000 deaths in 2023.<br><br>The ranking of COVID-19 as a leading cause of death in the US has decreased from third place in 2020 and 2021 to tenth place in preliminary data from 2023.<br><br>Dr. Cohen emphasized the importance of staying up to date on vaccines.\u00a0<br><br>She anticipated that an updated COVID-19 vaccine would be available in the fall and encouraged people to make plans to get it.<br><br>The CDC also recommends staying home when sick, seeking testing, and getting treatment to lower the chance of severe illness.\u00a0<br><br>According to the CDC, states and countries that have shortened recommended isolation periods have not seen increased hospitalizations or deaths from COVID-19.<br><br>The CDC&#8217;s updated guidance targets respiratory viruses and illnesses as a group, aiming to provide
